Teach and Train in Carlin

At ECSD, Career and Technical Education plays an important role in preparing students for life after graduation, whether they plan to enter the workforce, pursue an apprenticeship, attend college, or continue their technical training.

During the district's February 2026 Board of Trustees presentation, ECSD highlighted several encouraging CTE participation and student achievement figures.

1,952 high school students participated in CTE programs, accounting for nearly 3,000 course enrollments across a wide variety of pathways. Another 580 middle school students participated in CTE, exploring potential careers and developing skills before entering high school.

Perhaps most notably, ECSD's CTE graduation rate exceeded 95% in both the 2022–23 and 2023–24 school years, compared with overall district graduation rates of 82.5% and 82.9%, respectively.

ECSD's commitment to providing students with access to rigorous coursework has also received statewide attention. In reporting by The Nevada Independent, Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction Victor Wakefield highlighted Elko County and Clark County school districts as having 75–80% or more of students enrolled in rigorous coursework, including Advanced Placement, CTE, and dual enrollment programs. By comparison, Wakefield noted that only about half of students statewide are enrolled in a CTE course.

Together, these figures reflect the importance of offering students meaningful opportunities to explore their interests, develop valuable skills, and prepare for their futures.

Expanding Opportunities for ECSD Students

From agriculture, welding, and construction to health sciences, business, education, and technology, ECSD students have access to a diverse range of career pathways.

The district continues to prioritize expanding these opportunities as part of its strategic commitment to preparing students for the future.

Initiatives highlighted in the February Board presentation include:

  • Expanding Energy Technologies at Elko High School and Fire Science at Spring Creek High School.

  • Investing in shop improvements at West Wendover and agricultural learning opportunities at Spring Creek High School.

  • Strengthening partnerships with local industries.

  • Collaborating with Great Basin College and other post-secondary institutions to expand dual credit opportunities, allowing students to earn college credit while completing high school coursework.

These efforts help connect classroom learning with real-world experiences and the evolving workforce needs of Elko County.
