Dear ECSD Staff, Families, and Community Members,
I want to share an update as we continue moving through our budget planning process and prepare for an upcoming Board of Trustees meeting where I will present my recommendations related to the 2026–27 school year budget.
The Elko County School District Board of Trustees will hold its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, February 17, at 5:30 p.m., at the ECSD Board Room, 850 Elm Street. As always, the meeting will be streamed live on the district’s YouTube channel. The Board will hear my presentation and have a discussion of the recommendations presented. As always, public comment either at the meeting or via email to the board is an option and encouraged.
Prior to the regular meeting, the Board will also hold a Board Workshop beginning at 2:30 p.m., also at the Board Room and livestreamed. A board workshop is a public meeting and therefore open to the public, but differs from the regularly scheduled board meeting in that it is an opportunity for Trustees to learn more about their role, ask questions of district leadership, and review information that informs their decision-making during the regular meeting. For those interested in understanding the school budgeting process and how major financial decisions are considered, this workshop may be informative to observe.
The agenda for both the workshop and the regular Board meeting will be posted by 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 11, along with two attachments: a presentation with my recommendations and a report of the exploration done by the Budget Advisory Group.
As we move through this process, the district’s Budget & Funding Overview webpage will continue to be updated with timely information and resources. I appreciate those who have taken the time to review the materials already available, as understanding the process helps provide context for the conversations ahead.
I recognize that no single message, webpage, or presentation can answer every question. I encourage anyone seeking clarification to reach out—whether by email, phone, or in person—rather than relying on informal channels that can sometimes lead to misinformation or misunderstandings.
In that spirit of transparency, I also recently participated in an interview with The Nevada Independent discussing the broader budget challenges facing school districts across Nevada and how the state’s funding model affects communities like ours. For those interested in the statewide perspective, that article can be found here:
Finally, I want to sincerely thank those who have already taken the time to engage—by attending Board meetings, submitting comments, or reaching out with questions. The opportunity to listen, address concerns, and correct rumors is an important part of this work, and I am grateful for the respectful dialogue taking place as we navigate these challenges together.
Thank you for your continued involvement and commitment to the Elko County School District.
Sincerely,
CJ Anderson
Superintendent
