January 2026 STARS Recipients
Amy Petersen
Petersen, a teacher at Spring Creek Middle School, was nominated by her student, Noa Rowland.
In the nomination, Rowland praised Petersen for her kindness and the supportive environment she creates in her classroom.
“She gave everyone support and made sure we were her priority,” Rowland wrote. “Mrs. Petersen made me feel loved and gave me a safe environment where I could tell her anything that was making me upset, happy or scared.”
Rowland also noted that Petersen’s projects were engaging and meaningful. “They were fun, interactive and actually helped me learn the material,” the nomination said.
Brook Lowe
Lowe, an art teacher at Spring Creek High School, was nominated by a student.
The nomination highlighted Lowe’s patience and dedication to helping students succeed. “She helps her students out a lot when they need help, even if she has to repeat herself multiple times,” the student wrote.
“She is nice even when you make her mad,” the nomination continued. “She will help you if you need it. I appreciate everything she has done for me and other kids in her class.”
Holly Whittle
Whittle, an art teacher at Liberty Peak Elementary School, was nominated by more than 30 colleagues and community members.
Her nomination cited her extensive experience in education and her ability to build strong relationships with students across the community. “Many of her students and previous library patrons have been observed excitedly greeting her throughout the community,” the nomination stated.
Whittle is recognized for creating a safe and welcoming classroom while adapting lessons to meet the needs of all learners. “She establishes a comfortable learning environment and takes the time to make sure all students understand the curriculum concepts,” the nomination read.
Her dedication extends beyond the classroom through student art shows, community events and unpaid time spent supporting student growth. “Holly has repeatedly shown her commitment by going above and beyond for her students and school,” nominators wrote.
This recognition is made possible through the generosity of LeeAnne’s Floral Designs, Orla Mining, Dos Amigos, Maverick Gaming, Sugar y Spice, The Star, Fratelli Pizza and the Rotary Club of Elko Desert Sunrise.
Staff, students and community members are encouraged to nominate any school district employee who demonstrates exceptional commitment and performance in serving students. The nomination form is available on the STARS webpage on the Elko County School District website.
