At Liberty Peak, raising awareness for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) isn't just a health initiative—it's a heartfelt mission powered by students, teachers and families. Throughout November, in recognition of Diabetes Awareness Month, the school has embraced a series of creative, thoughtful activities designed to educate and uplift their community.

Why It Matters
Students living with Type 1 Diabetes—known at Liberty Peak as “Diabetic Warriors”—inspired a month of school-wide learning and action. Their strength and daily experiences have become a powerful teaching tool for their peers.

Student-Led Advocacy
Two brave 5th-grade students living with T1D created a powerful presentation, “Living with Diabetes,” and shared it with classrooms throughout the school. They spoke firsthand about what it's like to manage this lifelong condition every day. Their courage and leadership have helped their peers and teachers better understand the realities of T1D.

Activities That Make a Difference
Liberty Peak’s awareness campaign included:

  • A Coloring Contest: Students across the school submitted artwork, with the winners chosen by the Diabetic Warriors.

  • The Blue Balloon Challenge in P.E.: While dribbling a basketball, students had to keep a blue balloon afloat—symbolizing how someone with diabetes constantly balances life with their condition.

  • Integrated Learning: Teachers in grades 2–5 added diabetes-related materials to their reading lessons.

  • Wear Blue Day: In celebration of World Diabetes Day, students and staff showed their support by wearing blue on November 13.

contestUnderstanding Type 1 Diabetes
T1D is an autoimmune condition, not caused by diet or lifestyle. It cannot be prevented or cured and often shows up unexpectedly. Recognizing the early signs is critical. These include:

  • Extreme thirst

  • Frequent urination

  • Sudden weight loss

  • Drowsiness or fatigue

  • Fruity-smelling breath

  • Nausea or vomiting

A simple test by a doctor can detect high blood sugar levels.

What’s Next
These student leaders will soon share their message beyond the classroom. They are scheduled to present at an upcoming school board meeting, continuing their mission to spread awareness and understanding throughout our district.
