Elko County School District (ECSD) is proud to announce the STARS (Staff and Teachers Achieving Results with Students) award recipients for September 2025. These inspiring staff members have shown remarkable dedication to student success, compassion in their daily work, and a commitment to strengthening our school communities.

• Kyndra Thomas, Safe School Professional, Owyhee Combined School
Nominated anonymously, Kyndra Thomas has served as a Safe School Professional for five years, becoming a trusted resource for students and families in need of support. She focuses on the social, emotional, and academic well-being of students through counseling, crisis intervention, and advocacy. Kyndra also leads the Resilient Kids program and serves as a cheerleading coach, helping students build confidence both in and out of the classroom. Her compassionate leadership and commitment make a lasting impact across the district.

• Jesse Mittelstadt, Special Education Teacher, Sage Elementary School
Nominated by Mary Allenbaugh and an anonymous student, Jesse Mittelstadt is recognized for her extraordinary dedication to students with unique learning needs. She works tirelessly to understand and support each child’s strengths and challenges while maintaining open, empathetic communication with families. Parents praise her for creating a classroom environment where students feel valued and capable. One student shared, “She helps me when things are hard and makes me feel important.” Jesse’s kindness, organization, and passion for teaching shine through every day.

• Maria Ruiz, School Counselor, Adobe Middle School
Nominated anonymously and by Tammi Cavender, Maria Ruiz is recognized for her tireless advocacy on behalf of students facing challenges. She ensures students have access to essentials like clothing, hygiene items, and food—often providing support from her own resources. Maria also organizes meaningful community events and partnerships that enrich the school experience. Her compassion and commitment help students feel safe, confident, and ready to learn each day.
