March STars

Marnie Crozier, Jennifer Harris and Don Smales are the Elko County School District’s March STARS (Staff and Teachers Achieving Results with Students) award recipients. These outstanding staff members represent the heart of the district’s schools through their dedication, compassion, and daily impact on students’ lives.

Crozier is a kindergarten teacher at West Wendover Elementary School.

“Because of you, my little one loves to learn, looks forward to school every day and feels supported in the classroom,” said a parent who asked to remain anonymous. “You teach in ways she understands and help her catch on quickly. I’ve seen a huge improvement in her this year compared to when the school year began. Your love for teaching still shines through with these kids.”

Crozier GroupHarris, a special education teacher at Grammar No. 2 Elementary School, was nominated by Madilyne Humecky.

“She consistently goes above and beyond to develop meaningful, engaging materials tailored to the distinct educational needs of her students,” Humecky said. “Her innovative approach ensures that every child has the opportunity to thrive and achieve their full potential.”

Harris GroupSmales, the district’s transportation supervisor, was nominated by two individuals who asked to remain anonymous.

“Where do I even begin? Don comes to work every day with a smile on his face. He greets everyone and makes them feel welcome. He takes the time to visit with each employee and make sure he’s giving them all the help he can,” one nomination read.

“He has the tough task of making sure all the Elko routes are as efficient as possible,” another nomination read. “I am nominating Mr. Don Smales because he represents everything someone should be. He treats everyone with kindness, even when they haven’t treated him well. He always keeps his cool and tries to help parents as best he can. He is a hard worker.”
