SPARKS — Unlike other sports — including boys wrestling — the girl grapplers compete against all divisions.
On Saturday, two Elko County girls slammed down All-North regional championships.
Wells finished ninth in the team standings with 63.5 points and qualified two girls for the state tournament.
Elko followed in 10th with 58.5 points and punched one ticket to state, Spring Creek was 11th with 57 points and booked one state wrestler and West Wendover tied for 20th with 24 points.
Saylor Wendell
For Elko, Saylor Wendell posted a perfect 4-0 record with four pins en route to the 120-pound regional title.
In the championship, she flattened Spanish Springs’ Isabella Corea in 40 seconds.
Tegan Remington
For Wells, Tegan Remington captured the 115-pound championship and went a clean 5-0 with four pins.
For the title, she earned a 9-3 decision over Damonte Ranch’s Lyla Layson and avenged a pinfall to Layson during the Spring Creek Kiwanis Girls Invite.
RileyJo Glascock
The Lady Leopards — with Remington’s title — nearly cashed two championships as RileyJo Glascock ranked second in the 125-pound class. She tallied a record of 2-1 with a pair of pins and lost in the final by a 9-2 decision to Douglas’ River Klein.
Victoria Taylor
Spring Creek’s Victoria Taylor won the consolation championship and placed third, finishing 5-1 with five pins in the 135-pound division.
She won her first match by fall, dropped a 7-0 decision in her second but closed the tournament with four-consecutive wins and claimed the consolation title with a 42-second pin of White Pine’s Valivia Weiland.
Fifth-Place Finishers
Altogether, three Elko County wrestlers were one spot outside of a state qualification with fifth-place finishes.
Veronica Torres
West Wendover’s Veronica Torres went 5-2 with four pins in the 135-pound division.
Nevaeh Maynes
Elko’s Nevaeh Maynes was 4-2 with four pins at 155 pounds.
Alivia Amerigian
Spring Creek’s Alivia Amerigian finished 2-2 with one pin in the 125-pound class.
Sixth-Place Finishers
In total, six Elko County girls ranked sixth in their respective divisions.
Dusty Uhlig
For Wells, Dusty Uhlig finished sixth in the 125-pound class and went 3-3 with two pins and a win by technical fall.
Alondra Sotelo
Elko’s Alondra Sotelo placed sixth at 100 pounds and posted a record of 3-3 with two pins.
Crystah Mangel
Spring Creek’s Crystah Mangel went 3-3 with two wins by fall and one by forfeit for sixth in the 130-pound class.
Rose Sharp
Elko’s Rose Sharp finished sixth at 155 pounds and notched a 2-3 record with two wins by fall.
Corina Collins
Spring Creek’s Corina Collins also went 2-3 with two pins and placed sixth in the 105-pound division.
Jocelyn Covarrubias
West Wendover’s Jocelyn Covarrubias ranked sixth in the 235-pound class without a win on her record, going 0-3 after losing her first match and forfeiting the next two.
